Three ways acupuncture enhances a nutritional healing program

Acupuncture promotes detoxification, increases blood circulation and and  can be an important adjunct to any nutritional or herbal healing program for a few different reasons:
1. Acupuncture promotes blood and Qi circulation
Imagine you have a boat of all of this good nutrition and you are paddling it around. If you are living a high stress life your “Qi” (pronounced “chee”)-  which is a Chinese word used to describe key nutrients found in your blood like glucose, oxygen, and hormones for example-  will become stagnant or slow down.  In this metaphor, it’s like your arms get tired from paddling the boat. So using acupuncture can act as a propellor; like putting a little motor on the back of your boat to help move the Qi- improving detox pathways of your body and the rate of healing as the nutrition gets to the organs and extremities faster and with more velocity.
2. Acupuncture increases feel-good hormones
Hormones like dopamine, endorphins and oxytocin are released during acupuncture. This specifically can lead to calming of the nervous system, enhanced mood, and relaxation. Who couldn’t use a little relaxation when attempting to make dietary changes? 🙂
3. Acupuncture helps regulate the nervous system
If you are a nutrition patient you have heard me talk about the importance of nervous system regulation as an indicator of the rate and ease of nutritional healing. Acupuncture can help smooth out the rough edges of the healing process- especially in the beginning when the nervous system is the least healthy and most unstable. This happens by promoting homeostasis through balancing the system. We use a specific process for analyzing and then balancing your pulse.  As a result your nervous system regulates more effectively and this in turn promotes more effective and efficient healing.
Most acupuncturists have their new patients come in 2-3 times per week for the first 2-4 weeks and then weekly thereafter for another 10-12 weeks or more in the beginning – depending on the condition and severity- to get the body in a position for healing.
When a patient is on a nutrition program, thanks to the targeted nutrition for your body we don’t need to do acupuncture  as often and for as long, but we do need to do it somewhat regularly in the beginning. To get the full benefit of the acupuncture as an enhancement to a nutritional healing program you should come weekly for 4-6 weeks (depending on the condition) and then go to a couple of times per month for a while and eventually just as maintenance every 4-6 weeks (depending on lifestyle choices and stress levels).
