What is lymphatic therapy?
Lymphatic therapy targets the lymphatic system which is the secondary system of circulation in the body with a very complex set of tasks. Lymph is a clear fluid that contains important nutrients and oxygen similar to blood, with an important task of cleaning and nourishing cells.
People with chronic health conditions usually also have poor cellular health and can look “puffy” or inflamed. The more and longer someone is chronically ill, the more challenged the lymphatic system can become due to the toll chronic illness takes on organs of the body first and over time the cells as well. The organs involved in proper lymphatic movement are the kidneys (lower body), spleen (mid-section of the body), lungs (upper body, breasts and face) and the liver (ensuring proper cleansing of the whole system).
Slow lymphatic flow and weight gain
The cells of the body end up dumping toxins into the extracellular matrix and combined with chronic organ deficiency leads to what can appear as puffiness and essentially weight gain. The lymphatic system then is responsible for moving out toxins but because of the vicious cycle and toll chronic illness takes on the body’s organs flow can get slow and backed up causing more of these toxins to deposit into the fat cells. A lymphatic system that isn’t clearing effectively will eventually deposit toxins into the receptor sites (or parking spaces) of the fat cells leading to more weight gain and challenges with losing weight despite proper diet.
When movement is optimized, the cells are able to discard waste and toxic materials into this fluid. The lymphatic vessels pick up this waste and any excess fluid from around cells and transport it, via the lymph nodes which filter it, back into the general circulation. It’s a one-way shuttle, so lymph should only ever flow in one direction – away from the cells and towards the heart.
Common causes of poor lymphatic drainage
- Chronic illness/Auto-immune conditions that damage specific organs such as the spleen, kidneys, lungs and liver.
- Poor lifestyle choices are the most common causes of an inefficient lymphatic system, though they are certainly not the only ones.
- Lack of exercise – lymphatic fluid needs muscle power to push it round the body
- Poor diet – may increase congestion and produce more waste for the lymph to pick up and dispose of
- Pollutants – environmental and dietary
- Surgery and trauma
- Pregnancy
Benefits of lymphatic therapy
Every part of the body is influenced by the lymphatic system, because no matter what the purpose of the cells, they all need nourishing and cleaning. It’s important in immunity, inflammation and healing in general, so an efficient lymphatic system is going to help in many areas. Lymphatic drainage is a way to achieve that efficiency.
- Skin care: For a clearer complexion and to lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in facial tissue, as well as reducing puffiness around the eyes. Old scar tissue can be reduced while the appearance of new scars can be minimized. It’s commonly used before and after cosmetic surgery.
- Detox: At the end of winter, or after a period of high stress, the body will really benefit from lymphatic drainage, to reduce the sluggishness brought on by too many starchy, high fat foods and too little exercise.
- Headache: Most headaches, including sinusitis, have a component of congestion that responds well to lymphatic drainage. This congestion is because the brain and nervous system which contain a lot of lymph/glymph nodes will attempt to detox through the upper respiratory system (governed by the lungs). Once tissue is decongested, blocked fluid and blood flow improve, reducing pain and discomfort.
- Promote healing: After surgery or injury, the tissue may be swollen and sore. Lymphatic drainage is a gentle treatment that will help drain the tissue, reduce inflammation and improve healing.
- Pregnancy and after: There is often fluid retention in pregnant women and lymphatic drainage can improve comfort especially in legs and feet. Breastfeeding will be enhanced by this treatment, especially when there are problems with blocked ducts and sore tight breasts.
- Reduce swelling: After long periods of immobility such as air travel or lessened mobility, fluid tends to stagnate in the tissue making it puffy and tender.
- Arthritic and chronic pain conditions such as arthritis often have joints that are congested with fluid. All of these respond well when fluid is reduced with lymphatic drainage.
- Relaxation: Because it is such a gentle treatment, it is one of the most relaxing. And the relaxation is enhanced as the cleansing and rejuvenating effects relieve stress.
Most people will notice improvements in their level of well-being after a treatment because lymphatic drainage has so many benefits. Regular treatments are recommended, more frequent for about 4-6 weeks and then as a maintenance every 1-2 months depending on lifestyle and/or individual needs.
FLOWpresso®
FLOWpresso® is a breakthrough non-invasive natural therapy that delivers a 3-n-1 sensory treatment, comprised of compression, far infrared heat and deep pressure therapy. FLOWpresso® compression allows the body to change the way it moves and feels like there are many hands working on you at once. It can stimulate the body to release the toxins from your system. FLOWpresso delivers a stimulation, through cyclic compression, to different areas of the body. Each of the 22 chambers inflates sequentially, before its predecessor completely deflates, to ensure a selective progressive pressure. These chambers can be programmed individually to ensure the optimal experience.
What to Expect in a FLOWpresso Session
This unique combination of therapies releases toxins and puts the body into a ‘rest and restore’ state, working with our physiological processes to switch off fight or flight mechanisms, and facilitate healing and repair.
Our physiological processes
We have physiological processes that regulate the body’s involuntary reflexes, like heart rate, body temperature, breathing and blood pressure. Regular periods spent in a completely relaxed state — as opposed to a fight or flight state — give our body the time and energy it needs to repair, rejuvenate and reset.
Flowpresso® is a unique system that encourages a rest and repair state – the optimum state for the body’s healing processes.
The suit
Ours is the only full-body suit available, covering the legs, abdomen, arms and torso for a systemic therapeutic experience.
There are 22 individual chambers that inflate sequentially – each activating before the previous chamber fully deflates to deliver cyclical and consistent pressure.
Other features include:
• Customizable pressure settings that can be applied to each chamber.
• Two separate pre-programmed modes (sports and relaxation).
• Different cycles that can deliver an individualized experience for each client.
• Velcro fasteners to ensure the suit is comfortable for people of all shapes and sizes.
• Far infrared thermo-therapy that can be delivered separately to each of the four sections.
• Fiber carbon construction for durability and easy cleaning.
• A proprietary nano vibrational technology for improved energy flow.
A typical session
Patients remain fully clothed throughout their 40-minute session (long sleeves and full-length trousers required).
You will be helped into the suit by a technician before the systems’ air pressure and heat cables are connected to a computerized unit and the technician sets initial pressure/heat settings according to your needs.
Once the suit starts to inflate, you will experience a squeezing sensation which should feel similar to a hug, with no discomfort. Next, a gentle heat spreads through the suit that is designed to penetrate the body, not just the surface, to avoid overheating.
The technician ensures the settings are comfortable for you, before providing an optional eye mask and headphones to enhance fully immersive relaxation.
For optimal results
Patients experience the best results by investing in a series of regular sessions, rather than taking a one-off approach. This is because the more often we put the body into a parasympathetic state, the more opportunity it has to reset and repair.
And as we all know, regular relaxation is paramount in maintaining optimal mental health. This is why we recommend at least three sessions, with a minimum of three days in between sessions.
One session per week is ideal and there is no limit on how many sessions people can have.
Flowpresso® Therapy delivers compression, thermodynamic heat and deep pressure simultaneously to encourage the body’s inner systems to activate.
Compression therapy
Compression technology was first introduced to medicine to treat a variety of ailments, including circulatory conditions. About 25 years ago, compression was adopted for use in sport medicine in an attempt to improve exercise performance and recovery. The cyclic pneumatic compression within Flowpresso® is delivered to different areas of the body, allowing the body to change how it moves. Compression therapy helps encourage flow within the body and assist with releasing toxins from your system.
Most technology that is available on the market today consists of suits that only target a specific area (for example, the legs). This is not optimal, however, because the lymphatic system is EVERYWHERE in the body and targeting only one area of the body will move toxins from that area into another backed up area causing the results to be short lived and less effective.
Thermodynamic therapy
Thermodynamic energy, or heat therapy can help with a variety of health issues. Researchers discovered that when heat was applied to local areas or the whole body, it had a sleep-promoting effect. Flowpresso® utlizes thermotherapy in the four primary garment sections to embrace the body with a gentle, healing, warmth, creating a comforting environment that allows the body to finally rest and relax. The Flowpresso® warmth and temperature range are designed to encourage relaxation and sleep, promote circulation, and support an improvement in health and well-being.
Deep pressure therapy
Deep pressure is generally referred to as a form of tactile sensory input, which is delivered by holding, stroking, hugging, swaddling and squeezing. The technique of Deep Pressure Therapy is often used to calm anxious people – improving their ability to cope. A light touch used in more conventional lymphatic massage therapy settings can be alerting and even agitating to some people, while deep pressure typically has a calming effect on the senses. Flowpresso® applies deep pressure – similar to a hug – to the whole body through each individual chamber, generating a profoundly relaxing effect, allowing the body to calm and release the daily stress of life.
Nano Vibrational Technology (NVT) therapy
Flowpresso® utilizes nano vibrational technology to enhance the overall experience and combination of therapies. It delivers a proprietary vibrational frequency, stimulated by the conductivity of body heat. This technology has shown to increase energy flow and circulation within the body, while encouraging repair and restoration.
