Cupping Therapy

acupuncture cupping Denver

Although cupping is popular now, the therapy originated from ancient forms of alternative medicine dating back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures. Egyptians used cupping therapy in 1,550 B.C. It is also considered to be a valuable therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

People receive cupping for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, detoxification, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage.

Cupping removes harmful substances and toxins from the body to promote healing. The purpose of cupping is to enhance circulation, help relieve pain, remove “heat” and pull out the toxins that linger in the body’s tissues.

Benefits of Cupping

The therapy works when a localized suction is created on the skin to stimulate blood flow to promote healing. Sometimes the cups are moved across the areas being treated. Suction is created using heat (fire) and glass cups creating a vacuum by suctioning out the air.  As the fire goes out, they put the cup upside down on your skin.

As the air inside the cup cools, it creates a vacuum. This causes your skin to rise and redden as your blood vessels expand. The underlying tissue is raised, or sucked, partway into the cup. The cup is generally left in place for up to 3 minutes.

Patients often report that it feels like a deep tissue massage and that the process provides relief to tense areas.
